Agents acting under the direction of the Pinkerton Detective Agency, on the hunt for Frank and Jesse, surround the home in Kearney, Missouri, throw a device in through the window that explodes when shoved into the fireplace. Zerelda, the boys mother, has her right arm amputated below the elbow later as a result and Archie Peyton Samuel, half-brother of Jesse and Frank is killed.
